Young Scientists Club: Star Pilot

How the Star Pilot Device Works:

As you can see in the picture, the Star Pilot Device (used for the binocular fusion experiment) is held up to your eye while you look at the nights sky. Inside the Star Pilot, there is a red light, which you can adjust with a dimmer switch. The red light illuminated a celestial sphere "track ball" mounted in the end of the device.

Spinning the ball, you can see diagrams of constellations which are printed on the celestial track ball. Looking into the night sky with BOTH EYES OPEN enables you to superimpose the diagram over the REAL STARS in the sky, making identification of the Constellations much easier and a lot more fun. This is a very cleverly designed device and is fun to use!

From the Manufacturer:

"Technology, invention, culture, fun, and learning combine in this unique space kit.

Young scientists will explore the night sky using a specialized astronomical device called the Star Pilot™ that navigates the sky and locates the brightest stars and constellations.

A detailed color-illustrated manual includes fun astronomical information, experiments, diagrams, and constellation legends from cultures around the world.

• learn about the life cycle of a star
• discover asterisms such as the Big Dipper
•locate 23 constellations in the night sky

• and much more.

The final section of the manual contains beautifully illustrated celestial legends including the legends of the Milky Way, the stories of Orion and Leo, legends of Big Bear and its hunters, and more.
